For Immediate Release The call for Special Elections prompted by the retirement of former Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert, has created concerns among Election Officials within the ten election jurisdictions in the 14th Congressional District. These Election Officials are faced with a dilemma of complying with state statute regarding the conduct of special elections, which does not permit adherence to the statutory election timelines set forth in state and federal election law. The Election Officials have worked in concert with Governor Rod Blagojevich’s office to devise an election schedule that will allow for the conduct of the Election in light of the conflict of election provisions in state law. In order to avoid any election challenge to the Special Primary and Special General Elections called for in the 14th Congressional District, the Election Officials have filed suit in the Federal Court for issuance of a Declaratory Judgment to allow the Election Officials to abbreviate the statutory timelines for the conduct of the special elections. The Election Jurisdictions involved in the suit include DuPage County, Kane County, Bureau County, DeKalb County, Kendall County, Lee County, Henry County, and the City of Aurora. The Election Officials will seek an expedited hearing and ruling on the issue in light of the rapidly approaching elections. Plaintiffs’ attorney, Patrick Bond, stated that a judicial resolution of the issues raised in the lawsuit will alleviate any concern that the Election Jurisdictions, candidates, or voters may have over the constitutionality of shortened time frames and the effect such time frames could have on the conduct of these elections. Cunningham, Kane County Clerk, reminds Kane County residents that Tuesday, January 8, 2008, is the last day to register to vote for the February 5, 2008 General Primary. The County Clerk’s office is open for registration Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday, January 2, 2007 from 8:30 am to 8 pm. Also, most libraries, municipal, and township offices in Kane County do accept registrations. The Kane County Clerk’s Voter Registration office is located in Building B at the Kane County Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Avenue (Route 31), Geneva. To register, a person must be a United States citizen, 18 years old by the date of the election, a resident of the precinct for 30 days prior to the election, and provide two forms of identification, one of which shows a current address. Cunningham, Kane County Clerk, reminds registered voters who expect to be absent from the county on February 5, 2008 for the General Primary or who are physically incapacitated and unable to go to the polling places, that beginning December 27, 2007 they may apply for an absentee ballot. The last day a ballot can be mailed to a voter is Thursday, January 31, 2008. Residents, who want to vote early, may also do so in person.

For Immediate Release Kane County Clerk, John A. Cunningham, offers Voter Registration at Swedish DaysJohn A. Cunningham, Kane County Clerk says the Vote Mobile will be available during Swedish Days, June 19 – 24. “You will find us parked at the corner of State and 3rd”, said Cunningham. Cunningham will provide an opportunity for Voter Registration during this time period. Information will also be available regarding other services provided by the Clerk’s Office. “With the Presidential Primary coming up early in 2008, it is important that any Illinois citizen wishing to register to vote stop by the Vote Mobile”, Cunningham said. “Just look for the Vote Mobile!” The Vote Mobile provides for a multitude of options to assist voters in Kane County. It has been used to increase the number of Early Voting sites in the last four elections. In April, it was in 19 different locations throughout the County. By utilizing the Early Voting Option, residents can avoid lines and waiting on Election Day.
It is also used as an educational tool for the public and the poll workers who handle
the precincts on Election Day. eSlates have been installed that the Voters can inspect
and even try out to familiarize themselves with the new equipment.

R. 811 (Holt Bill) Dear Chairwoman McDonald and Ranking Member Ehlers: I am again writing to oppose H.R. 811 and request insertion into the official Record of the Committee on House Administration before the scheduled vote to send the bill to the floor of the House of Representatives. My objections to this legislation are many, but its most objectionable requirements include the following:
As the Kane County Clerk, I request that you oppose H.R. 811. Efforts have been made in our County in promoting the integrity of the voting process. The requirements of this bill would erode this integrity and diminish voter confidence while increase the cost of our election.
